Trick or Treat! Lady Hawks Score Big on Halloween |
| Wedensday November 2,2011 |
Monday night marked the start of UIL 4A playoffs for the Red Oak Lady Hawks and had them traveling down to a neutral match site at Waco Robinson High School. The bi-district match pitted Red Oak as co-district 15 champions against the Elgin wildcats who finished fourth in district 16.
While many Texans donned costumes and walked their neighborhoods seeking free candy, the Lady Hawks put their game faces on and went into action dismantling the Elgin wildcats in three sets. Coach Hope Porter had her squad focused early and took a quick 25-13 win in the first set. The second set proved more challenging as the Wildcats seemingly woke up midway through and erased an early Lady Hawk lead. Red Oak miscues further allowed the Wildcats to get into the game and suddenly both teams had scored more than 20 points. As Elgin and their fans began to almost believe an upset was in the works, Red Oak regained their feet and closed out the set narrowly winning 25-23 extinguishing any Wildcat hopes of stealing a victory.
The close call was enough to energize then Lady Hawks and they quickly refocused on the task at hand - defeating Elgin, winning the bi-district championship and advancing toward a state tournament berth.
The third set more closely resembled the first and the Lady Hawks dismissed the Wildcats handing them a trick on this Halloween night winning 25-13 and earning a round two match in this year's playoffs for the Red Oak faithful...clearly a treat.
The next playoff match will be either this Friday or Saturday against the Hallsville Ladycats. The exact time and location will be posted when it has been finalized. |

Lady Hawks Make Quick Work of West Mesquite Lady Wranglers |
| Thursday September 29,2011 |
Tuesday night in September and October means volleyball and the match at the Red Oak HS gymnasium this past Tuesday evening had the Lady Hawks welcoming the West Mesquite Lady Wranglers only to ambush them in what turned out to be an extremely lopsided victory. Set one finished with the Lady Wranglers only earning 4 points off the highly motivated and very focused Red Oak team that did not even make it through one full rotation before the set ended. The second set got worse for a struggling West Mesquite team where the Lady Hawks improved their score winning easily 25-3. Coach Hope Porter mixed up the line- up in the third set but an intense Red Oak squad continued their stingy ways holding West Mesquite to a mere 5 points. Hard-hitting middle Kennedi Coleman smashed down 19 kills benefitting from the sets of Emmalee Smith (12), Taylor Anderson (11), and Elyse Berlin (7). Berlin also had 21 points served on the night and 7 aces. More kills were added by Caleah Wells (6) and Alyse Bailey (4). Mallory Bolin covered the back court like a blanket picking up 13 digs and doing so with ease and confidence. Rounding out the notable performances on the night was Averi Walker who stepped to the line and had 14 points served while also helping establish superb team defense throughout the match. |

| ...And The Count Goes On. Lady Hawks Tomahawk Waxahachie in 5 Games |
| Sunday September 25, 2011 |
|
The Red Oak Lady Hawks put their 22 year district winning streak on the line Friday night against the #4 ranked Waxahachie Lady Indians.
The tension in the air was palpable, this moment having begun building at the close of last season when a tough Lady Indian squad with promising young hitter and setter, Kate Praslicka, fell to the Lady Hawks in four sets. The winning Lady Hawk team that year featured a gifted all around player and 4A All State Team selectee, Senior Hunter Porter, and two talented middles, Caleah Wells and Kennedi Coleman, who were all key contributors to the victory. This year, with Porter moving on to play at the NCAA Division II level with Emporia State, Senior Caleah Wells and Junior Kennedi Coleman, are not just the middles of the Red Oak team, they are also the heart, having collectively amassed 728 kills on the season and putting up 242 successful blocks. Friday night was not just a collision between regional powers it was a territorial conflict that had to be resolved...who would lay claim to the title 'best in the county' and would 'the streak' finally be derailed by the surging Lady Indians.
As the crowds filed in, the noise level began to climb and even before the first whistle signifying the start of play, the fans were cheering their teams on in almost a fevered pitch. With the first serve beckoned, the issue was in doubt...the Lady Hawk's rich tradition of winning and district dominance was on the line. Set one was played by both teams riding high on adrenaline and pushing their athletic abilities to the limit. The Lady Hawks emerged as the winner closing the set out strong 25-21. The second set was highly contested featuring 17 ties along the way to another Lady Hawk victory (25-20) again closing out the set with hard hitting from Caleah Wells and Kennedi Coleman who were fed by steady, accurate sets dished up by setters Emmalee Smith and Elyse Berlin.
The Lady Indians struck back in set three behind the all around play of Kate Praslicka winning 25-17 despite excellent defense from Lady Hawk back row defensive mavens Averi Walker, Mallory Bolin and Demi Burnett. The Red Oak emotion was beginning to wane and as several fans began to make their way toward the football field across the street, the fourth set got underway. The Lady Hawks were apparently beginning to doubt themselves and their numerous fans, now quieted, were no longer a source of strength in the face of their nemesis.
The Lady Indians began to believe and worked their way into an early 5 point lead in set four 13-8, then 19-12 and then winning 25-18 setting up a classic all or none fifth set to 15. As the coin toss took place on the sideline with the two captains, Waxahachie's Kate Praslicka and Red Oak's Emmalee Smith making the call, the Red Oak fans began to stir urging one and all to rally in support of the visiting team and somehow, some way, will the Lady Hawks back to their earlier form and to one final victory on the night.
Game five opened with Sophomore Chloe Davis splitting two defenders and delivering a kill to rally her team and awake their senses. The deciding set lived up to the expectations as the two teams constantly rallied to keep the ball in play and capitalize on every opportunity to attack leaving everything on the court that they had to offer. Tied at 9 a piece the Lady Indians had a short run of two and then lead 11-9. The Lady Hawks swooped back in to tie it up again at 12...then 13-13 and then moved to the precipice of victory 14-13. The final point began with a Coleman serve and as the Lady Indians received the serve and worked into an attack from the right side they were met by the staunch defense of Wells and the ball dropped back harmlessly onto the Waxahachie side of the court ending the Lady Indian dreams of a win and securing the continuation of the streak for the Red Oak Lady Hawks and their fans. Game five was in the books 15-13.
These two programs face off again at Red Oak on October 25th.
Notable Performances on the night for the Lady Hawks were:
Caleah Wells with 25 kills, 9 blocks
Kennedi Coleman with 18 kills, 6 blocks and 6 digs Emmalee Smith with 34 assists and 7 digs Elyse Berlin with 19 assists, 9 kills and 6 digs Averi Walker with 12 digs Alyse Bailey with 6 kills and 2 digs Demi Burnett with 6 digs Mallory Bolin with 3 digs and 1 ace (the only ace of the night for RO) Chloe Davis with 3 kills and 1 dig Lindsey Boyce with 2 kills and one block |

'Yarr' Best is Not Enough |
| Saturday September 17 2011 |
Friday night at on the Red Oak home court the Lady Pirates came calling. The Lady Hawks fired the first shot across their bow in set one winning 25-17 and aiming to dash their hopes and earn their surrender. The Lady Pirates answered straight away with a shot of their own in set two (23-25) and let the Lady Hawks know they were intent on not giving up the ship without a fight. Sensing the determination of the Lady Pirates the Lady Hawks sent a volley of unmistakable domination their way pounding the ball down on their side of the court racking up 49 kills on the night including 22 from Caleah Wells, 13 from Kennedi Coleman and 9 from Alyse Bailey. Defensively the majority of the swashbuckling was done by Mallory Bolin and Emmalee Smith each earning 10 digs. Smith also lead all setters with 26 assists while Bolin lead the team in points served with 18. Wells parried exceptionally well blocking 7 would be Lady Pirates attacks. All around pirate fighting expertise was provided by Elyse Berlin who ended the game with 16 assists, 6 digs, 7 points served and 2 kills. Set three concluded with the Lady Hawks amassing a formidable lead and closing it out 25-12 and in set four the 'yarr' was knocked out of the Lady Pirates as they fell again 25-12. |

| One Cat Too Many |
| Wednesday September 7, 2011 |
The Lady Hawks hosted the Midlothian Panthers Tuesday evening in what has proven to be a highly competitive match over the years. Tuesday's match was not exception with the Lady Panthers coming out and taking game one, 20-25, from a very flat Red Oak team. Set two went the Lady Hawks' way as they began to show signs of life in a close set 25-22. Set three looked more like the first with everything going the Lady Panther's way – each close call, each fateful roll of the ball down the net...all lines seemed to work in their favor ending with a score of 18-25. Coach Hope Porter and the Lady Hawk faithful tried to inject some energy and life in the Red Oak varsity squad but the team would not have it and struggled to create plays and scrambled in vain to put a run of points on the scoreboard. Set four sealed the Lady Hawk loss 17-25 despite several lineup changes by Coach Porter hoping to spark some more competitive play. The Lady Panthers claimed their victory and celebrated with their fans leaving the Red Oak crowd in disbelief in an awkwardly silent home side of the gymnasium. |

The Lady Hawks kept their opponent in check all evening with the tiger taming defense lead by libero Averi Walker, and defensive specialists Mallory Bolin & Demi Burnett. Varsity newcomers Alyse Bailey and Chloe Davis combined for 8 kills adding to the offensive barrage which was facilitated by well-placed assists coming from setters Emmalee Smith, Elyse Berlin and Taylor Anderson. The Lady Hawks easily won in three sets, 25-10, 25-9 and 25-9. |

| District Win #2 in the Bag, Along with the Cat! |
| Wednesday, August 31, 2011 |
For the second time this year the Lady Hawks travelled away to meet a district opponent...and for the second time they dominated the match from start to finish.
All was not well though for the Lady Hawks on the evening against the Terrell lady tigers. The first set started out with some confusion and flat play then, at the urging of Coach Hope Porter, things fell into place. Playing the Lady Hawk brand of volleyball marked by disciplined ball control, precision play execution and staunch defense, Red Oak claimed a 25-10 win in the set after first struggling early on.
The young Lady Hawks team then quickly set to work on securing a second win behind consistent serving from Kennedi Coleman, Emmalee Smith, and Demi Burnett. Caleah Wells and Kennedi Coleman provided powerful hitting along the way to easily winning 25-6.
The third set was more of the same but was highlighted by serving sensation Kennedi Coleman. The talented junior middle proved she could contribute from beyond the front line as she ran off numerous served points leading to a 25-8 Lady Hawk victory and a 3-0 match win. Kennedi finished the night with a team high 30 served points.
Other notable contributors were setters Emmalee Smith, Taylor Anderson, and Elyse Berlin finishing with 28 assists combined. |

| Aledo Slams the Brakes on Red Oak |
| Tuesday, August 16, 2011 |
The Lady Hawks travelled across the metroplex Tuesday to take on the Aledo Bearcats. The Lady Bearcats presented quite a challenge for last year's squad beating them in straight sets. With the Bearcats having several returning seniors, Coach Hope Porter knew the Red Oak varsity team had their work cut out for them.
Aledo came out in the first set ready to play and quickly defeated the Lady Hawks. In the second set the Lady Hawks awoke and met the Lady Bearcat challenge defeating them 26-24 behind disciplined defense, and excellent middle play.
The 3rd set was highly competitive. Strong serving by the Lady Hawks pushed the Lady Bearcats but did not result in a victory. The bearcats won the 3rd game.
The fourth game again found the Lady Hawks and the Lady Bearcats fighting for every point. Errors were costly for both sides and the dominant middle play of Caleah Wells and Kennedi Coleman continued. Senior setter Emmalee Smith was a key contributor to the effort sophomore Elyse Berlin added to the Lady Hawk offense.
As an early season barometer the match showed this year’s team can compete with some of the upper echelon teams. It also showed there is certainly room for growth and improvement...and that capacity to progress and develop should inspire Hope for this year's team. |

| Young Lady Hawk Team Rises to Early Challenges |
| Thursday, August 11, 2011 |
In what typically comprises the heart of the Regional Tournament, early matches between the Lady Hawks, Highland Park, and Richardson Pearce provided a glimpse of good things yet to come.
Coming off a tough Lovejoy loss, the Lady Hawks quickly rebounded by playing point for point with Pearce and taking Highland Park in 5. The close losses to Pearce could have been enough to derail a young team but the Lady Hawks proved that they were a scrappy bunch.
With every win, you can see the confidence building within the team and coaches. There is still a lot of work to be done but the Lady Hawks are heading in the right direction.

Back to Back- Lady Hawks Take Denton Ryan Kickoff Classic Championship |
Sunday, August 14, 2011 |
For the 2nd consecutive year, the Lady Hawks swooped into Denton County and brought home the Championship. Coming off an exciting Highland Park victory, the Lady Hawks proved more than ready for tournament play.
Guaranteed 5 games, the Lady Hawks would open up Friday making quick work of Frisco Heritage (3-0), North McKinney (3-0), and Frisco High (3-0). With the wins, the Lady Hawks would be playing in the Gold Bracket when play resumed on Saturday.
Saturday’s competition against Argyle was as good as the Lady Hawks had seen up to this point in the season. Argyle’s heavy hitters were equally matched by Caleah Wells and Kennedi Coleman. Argyle pushed the Lady Hawks to 5 games before succumbing 15-13 and subsequently the match (3-2). The win over Argyle put the Lady Hawks right where they were hoping to be, the Gold Bracket Championship.
In the Championship game, the Lady Hawks found themselves playing the 3rd team from Frisco ISD. Frisco Wakeland would be the final victim of the tournament falling (3-0) to the Lady Hawks. It was a great way to close out one of the toughest schedule starts in the area. Kennedi Coleman and Elyse Berlin were named MVP’s for their outstanding play. |
